Ofcom approved the license transfer from 209radio to Cambridge 105 with immediate effect on 19th July 2010. Due to this being a license transfer, the station was obliged to start broadcasting immediately upon receipt of the license. Notification was received on the afternoon of Monday 18th July that the transfer would occur the following day. On the evening of 19th July, the station debuted with Sammy B-Side spinning some late night Hip-Hop. On Wednesday evening there was Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady with Kuryakin from Cambridge Revelation 2000, while Thursday saw the debut of The House of Rock and Resistance Radio and Friday launched with Bass in your Face! The playlist was still in its embryonic stages, and it would be several months before the schedule began to be fleshed out properly.
Cambridge 105 operates a system that separates all of its programming between 'Daytime' and 'Specialist' from Monday to Friday.
Cambridge 105 broadcasts from its studios on Gwydir Street, in the city centre of Cambridge. Construction of the studios began shortly after the premises were acquired in October 2010. The first broadcasts from the site began as early as December whilst building work continued around both live and pre-recorded programming.
The studios were constructed by carpentry and joinery students from Cambridge Regional College, who kindly volunteered their time. In return, they got some experience and references that could help find them their first jobs after finishing their courses.[1][2]
The Cambridge 105 schedule runs across two weeks, with some specialist programming alternating fortnightly, whilst some remain weekly. This is due to volunteer programme maker availability. Daytime programming covers an eclectic mix of popular music from as early as the 1950s all the way through to the present day, whilst specialist picks up on a diverse range of genres. The schedule is available on the station's website.[3]
The current weekday Breakfast show is hosted by Neil Whiteside and Sara Woo-Sam. The show broadcasts from 6.30am until 9:30am every weekday, with news at the top of every hour, and regular travel updates. The show plays an eclectic mix of music, with tracks from the '60s onwards played alongside contemporary acts and music form the charts.
The current weekday Drivetime show is hosted by Tim Willett along with a member of the news team. The show broadcasts from 4:00pm until 7:00pm every weekday, with news at the top of every hour, and regular travel updates.
Saturday Breakfast is hosted by Karl Ashton from 8am until 11am every Saturday Morning.
Sunday Breakfast is hosted by Chris Mann from 8am until 11pm. The show features easy-listening music and reviews of the Sunday newspapers.
